New: Olive Oil from La Riojana!

Shoppers at Central Co-op may be familiar with La Riojana wine, which we feature as an affordable Co+op Basics product due our relationship with them as a cooperative winery. La Riojana is an Argentinian farmer-owned co-op that is the biggest exporter of Fair Trade wine in the world. The partnership between La Riojana and American food co-ops is a reflection of Cooperative Principal 6: Cooperation Among Cooperatives. Now that partnership is deepening as La Riojana is offering their first batch of organic extra virgin olive oil exclusively in the US to members of the National Cooperative Grocers (like us)!

The ancestors of many of La Riojana’s 500+ growers were migrants from Italy who settled in the Famatina Valley in the remote northwest region of La Rioja and can trace their families back through four generations of La Riojana cooperative members.

La Riojana’s extra virgin organic olive oil is a blend of Arauco and Manzanilla organic olive varieties, with an aroma of green and ripe olives, notes of dried fruits and a combination of spicy and sweet flavors. They received Fair Trade certification in 2015, making them the first Fair Trade certified olive oil producer in all of Latin America.

La Riojana’s extra virgin organic Fair Trade olive oil is available for a limited time and is on sale through February 28.
